Keeping your own identity in a relationship

In my role as Director of Introductions UK, one of the most successful Professional Introduction Agencies, since 1991, I have spoken to thousands of people about their relationships.
Becoming too absorbed as a couple can leave you vulnerable. I often explain to clients of Introductions UK that it is absolutely fine to have different interests and hobbies, in fact I would recommend it.
It is not advisable to expect one person to supply everything you need. Therefore it is a good idea to have one designated night out with friends once a week or once a month. Make sure you do not ignore your friends just because you have gained a new partner. Friendships should be cherished just as much as a new partnership.
Work on boosting your self-esteem. Investing everything in your relationship can be a sign of insecurity so building up your self-esteem may help. Find an interest that makes you feel good about yourself, whether that is getting fitter or learning a new language. You will also make new friends, which is a great confidence booster. Remember, people who maintain their own interests are always more attractive to others.
If you have both fallen into depending on each other, your partner may find it difficult if you start to assert your own identify. Explain how much you love your partner and that you enjoy the things you share. However you can also explain that you feel it is important for the future of your relationship that you do have some separate friends and interests. However, do not push them too hard, they may decide to follow your lead naturally at some time in the future.
Finally, treasure your relationship and your friends and interests and try to keep a happy balance between them all. By keeping your own identity in a relationship it has a much better chance of long term success.
If you would like to discuss how to find a new partner in your life by joining an Introduction Agency, please do call the team on 0800 0962457. The Personal Matching Consultants at Introductions UK Ltd will be happy to explain exactly how we work and give you the prices for membership.
